Boron Carbide (B4C) which is sometimes called “black diamond” is a supremely hard material (Mohs hardness > 9).  Only diamond and cubic boron nitride are recognized as harder materials. Boron Carbide is produced by the reaction of Boric Acid and Carbon at high temperatures in an electric arc furnace. The material is then processed and milled for use.

Typical Properties:

  • High Hardness
  • Abrasive wear resistance
  • Fracture toughness
  • Chemical inertness
  • High neutron absorbing cross section
  • Excellent reputation for Lapping, Polishing, and Surface Prep Applications

Typical Applications:

  • Abrasives
  • Blast nozzles
  • Body armor & Military Armor Applications
  • Honing stones & sticks
  • Hot-pressed parts
  • Lapping
  • Metal Matrixes
